Founded in 1889 American National Zoological Park National Zoological Park , also briefly National Zoo called lies, north of Washington DC and is one of the oldest zoos in the United States . In addition to the 66 hectare park, the Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute (SCBI) in Front Royal with its 1,300 hectare facility, which is not open to the public, is part of the zoo. Based on about 30 million US dollars donations per year (consisting of 70% public and 30% private donations) can park afford, as part of the Smithsonian Institution to raise no entrance fee. The zoo is a member of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA).
The zoo has about 30 hectares in the publicly accessible visitor area, which in a natural, hilly area with steep gradients can only be mastered with effort for the disabled. The zoo is home to 30 to 40 endangered animal species on both properties.
On April 11, 1973, the Smithsonian National Zoological Park was added to the National Register of Historic Places as a Historic District .
