The Arthur M. Sackler Gallery is a Museum for Asian Art in Washington, DC , United States , and is part of the Smithsonian Institution . It is one of two houses of the National Museum of Asian Art , the other is the Freer Gallery . The Sackler Gallery opened in 1987 after Arthur M. Sackler donated 1,000 works of Asian art. Since then, the collection has been expanded, for example with the Vever collection of Islamic documents from the 11th to 19th centuries, prints and porcelain from the 19th and 20th centuries from Japan, paintings from China, India, Japan and Korea as well as contemporary Chinese ceramics and photographs.

The gallery is on the National Mall , just behind the Smithsonian Castle . The main rooms are underground and connect the museum to the Freer Gallery. The main entrance is between the Smithsonian Castle garden and Independence Avenue . Although the museum uses its own exhibition rooms and depots for the works of art, it shares the director, administration and staff with the Freer Gallery.
