The Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama (short: STRI ) is a US research institution and part of the Smithsonian Institution . It is the only Smithsonian institution outside of the United States . The STRI is headquartered in Panama , where it has several research stations: including Barro Colorado Island in the Panama Canal and the Marine Exhibition Center on Calzada de Amador . There are also numerous laboratory and conference rooms spread across Panama.

The rainforest of Barro Colorado Iceland is thanks to the work of STRI as the best forschtes tropical ecosystems worldwide.
