Front Royal is a place in Warren County in the US state of Virginia . The population was 13,589 according to the 2000 census . It is the county seat of Warren County.

Front Royal is located approximately 122 km west of Washington, DC , at the confluence of the North and South Fork Shenandoah Rivers to the Shenandoah River . According to the United States Census Bureau , the place has a total area of 24.6 km², of which 24 km² is land and 0.6 km² is water.
About Front Royal
Front Royal was known as Loce and Helltown in the 18th century . It received a rail link in 1854 with the construction of the Alexandria, Orange and Manassas Gap Railroad between Manassas and Riverton. This route was soon expanded to Strasburg and became a decisive factor in the Battle of Front Royal on May 23, 1862 during the American Civil War . Logging, farming, factories, and flour mills provided secure jobs in the region for decades after the American Civil War.
The origin of the name Front Royal remains uncertain. The first of the two most common versions of the name origin assumes that in the first decades of European settlements the area was given to the French under the name le front royal . This meant the British border. French settlers, trappers and explorers in the Ohio area in the middle of the 18th century, the land - granted by King Charles II - was handed over. It was later controlled by Baron Lord Thomas Fairfax of Cameron.
The legendärere and more exciting version of the name origin is as follows: For the colonial era a huge standing oak tree , the royal (engl. Royal ) Tree of Englishmen, in a public square, where today Chester and Main Street intersect. Here the local vigilante groups were taught military commands and maneuvers. The awkwardness and incompetence of his troops enraged the drill sergeant so much that he issued an order that all could understand. He shouted, "front the Royal Oak!" Among the spectators was a former professional soldier. He was so pleased with the formative effect of the Sergeant's orders that he and his friends passed the story on. They repeated Front the Royal Oak until Front Royal was called as it is today.

Important details
Front Royal is home to the Randolph-Macon Academy (founded in 1892), which hosts the Air Force JROTC program. Front Royal is also home to Christendom College and the Smithsonian Institution's Conservation and Research Center . Like many other places, Front Royal faced the challenge of keeping jobs.
In Front Royal there was also the Avtex Fibers Superfund site. What was once the largest toxic waste-contaminated site of a former plastic fiber factory is becoming a 0.71 km² environmentally friendly business park, 12 10,000 m² football fields and 0.97 km² nature reserve along the Shenandoah River . Front Royal is also home to the Canine Enforcement Training Center (CETC), which trains dogs for various investigative skills for numerous federal agencies.
Major tourist attractions include the Skyline Caverns , the north entrance to Shenandoah National Park, and Skyline Drive . There are also a large number of American Civil War attractions , both in the city and in the surrounding Shenandoah Valley .
The Front Royal Cardinals baseball team played in the Valley League in 1984 . The games will be played at Bing Crosby Stadium. Bing Crosby donated the land and money to build the original stadium. 1953 Frank Nesbitt coached a team from Front Royal, which played in the Little League and was 3rd in the world tournament. Freddie Moore was one of the players on that team. He later became active in the Royal Little League front. After Moore died of cancer, one of the fields on the Royal Little League front was named after him - to honor him.
The museum on Chester Street has many interesting artifacts from the 1860s.
Front Royal was designated Virginia's canoe capital.
The Bering Truck Corporation also had its headquarters in Front Royal .
