The Shenandoah is a right tributary of the Potomac River , approximately 150 miles long, in the US states of Virginia and West Virginia . As the main tributary of the Potomac, it drains the lateral valleys of the Appalachians west of the Blue Ridge Mountains .
The bedrock of the Shenandoah river valley consists of limestone . The karst landscape is popular with tourists. The river is also known from the American folk song Oh, Shenandoah, I long to hear you… . He is also mentioned in John Denver's song Country Roads . Shenandoah is also the original US title of the feature film The Man from the Great River .
