World Association of Zoos and Aquariums
The World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) is the international umbrella organization of all major zoos and aquariums in the world. The office is located in Gland VD , Switzerland.
history
As the International Union of Directors of Zoological Gardens (IUDZG) (German International Union of Directors of Zoological Gardens ) founded in Basel in 1935 , it was immediately dissolved again during the Second World War . In 1946 the IUDZG was re-established in Rotterdam by a group of zoo directors from the allied and neutral countries. Since 1991 the IUDZG has had the subtitle WZO - The World Zoo Organization, which completely replaced the name IUDZG in 1998. In 2000, the organization changed its name to the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA) to show that it is a modern institution that works on a global level - along with other major conservation organizations such as CITES, CBD or CMS makes an important contribution to nature conservation.
Since it was founded, international stud books have been kept for rare and endangered animal species that are under the constant control of WAZA. To date, the number of stud books is 182. Since 1950 WAZA has also been a member of the International Union for the Conservation of Species (IUCN).
When several regional zoo and aquarium associations were founded in 1990, for example EAZA , PAAZAB , ARAZPA , AMACZOOA and SEAZA, the IUDZG had to rethink its structure and functions. In connection with this, several changes were decided and implemented:
- 1991: The title WZO - The World Zoo Organization was added to the name.
- 1992: New membership guidelines were introduced. The first four zoo associations to become members were CAZA, EAZA, SEAZA and VDZ.
- 1993: The Committee on Interregional Conservation Cooperation (CIRCC) published the World Zoo Conservation Strategy for the first time.
- 1994: ISIS became the official secretariat of the association.
- 1995: The Zoos 2005 document was developed.
- 1996: The Heini Hediger Prize was awarded for the first time.
- 1998: The name IUDZG was replaced by WZO.
- 1999: An ethics guideline was adopted.
- 2000: New regulations, a new image and the name WAZA were adopted.
- 2001: A permanent association headquarters was opened in Bern .
- 2002: A directive for the welfare of animals was adopted.
- 2003: At the annual conference in San José in Costa Rica , the ethical guidelines and the guideline for the welfare of animals were combined into a single one, the mission was standardized, the sight and value statements improved and the WAZA guidelines on the acceptance of confiscated and confiscated animals were accepted.
- 2004: At the conference in Taipei , the entire membership association adopted a new World Zoo Conservation Strategy, which officially came into effect on May 2, 2005.
- 2005: Research guidelines were adopted and WAZA attended the Parties to the Ramsar Convention and the Convention on Migratory Species for the first time .
