The Prague Zoo ( Zoo Praha ) is the largest zoo in the Czech Republic . It opened relatively late, on September 28, 1931, later than other Czech zoos. It is located in the Troja district on the Vltava River , in an area that is also valuable from a geological and cultural point of view as well as from a nature conservation perspective. Probably the most important achievement of the Prague Zoo is its contribution to the rescue of the Przewalski horse . In 2015 it was named the fourth best zoo in the world by TripAdvisor .

Livestock

On an area of 58 hectares (the exhibitions make up 50 hectares) it lies in a landscape that is criss-crossed by natural watercourses and streams. 4,716 animals of more than 681 species live in the park (as of December 31, 2015). The zoo holds typical visitor magnets, such as B. Asiatic elephants , big cats ( Siberian tigers , Asiatic lions , Amur leopards , clouded leopards and cheetahs ), Eurasian wolves and polar bears . Striped hyenas , sun bears and numerous rarely shown ungulate species such as the West Caucasian ibex , Himalayan tahr , lowland anoas , Burma lyre deer , kiangs , kulans and white-naped bog antelopes also deserve mention. The newest and most modern systems are those for the giant tortoises and gorillas as well as the Africa house for aardvarks , warthogs and other African animal species. Other rare species in Prague Zoo are the Malaysia tiger , blue iguana , Chinese giant salamander and Lear's macaw . Attached is an extremely spacious outdoor area for red shield giraffes , plains zebras and African antelope species. On November 29, 2004, one of the largest projects in the history of Czech zoos, an artificial Indonesian rainforest , including pig monkeys and orangutans , opened. In 2010 a new, enlarged facility was built for Asian elephants , hippos , sable antelopes and bongos . The largest group of gharials in Europe lives in Prague Zoo . A separate building was erected in 2008 for the Chinese giant salamander, one of the rarest vertebrates on earth.

Special events

On August 13, 2002 there was a violent flood in Prague. Over 1,000 animals were brought to safety from the approaching water masses, 50 animals were released. Nevertheless, 134 animals died in the floods, including the Asian bull elephant Kadira . The sea lion Gaston , who swam across the Vltava and Elbe to Germany, but died during the return journey to Prague, received international press attention .

In 2005 the newborn gorilla Moja received a lot of attention in the Czech Republic (and also abroad) , and what was happening in the gorilla pavilion could be observed via the Internet.
