The German Society for Herpetology and Terrarium Science (DGHT) is a non-profit association for the promotion of herpetology and terrarium science . It was founded in 1964 as the successor organization to the "Salamander", which had existed since 1918.

It has around 6000 members from more than 30 countries and is dedicated to topics from:

  • Science and Research
  • Nature , species and animal protection
  • Reptile and Amphibian Medicine
  • Breeding, keeping and care of terrarium animals
  • Training and examinations Certificate of competence in terraristics according to § 11 Animal Welfare Act

Herpetology as the science of reptiles and amphibians and terraristics on the other hand determine the profile of society. It also alternately determines the reptile and amphibian of the year .

Further periodicals are published by various working groups, currently on the subjects of "turtles" (RADIATA), "snakes" (ophidia), "literature and history" (secretary), "chameleons" (CHAMAELEO), "skinks" (Scincus), " Amphibians "(amphibia) and" Lizards "(The Lizard).

In addition, the DGHT organizes conferences and specialist lectures, supports and promotes herpetological research as well as nature and species protection projects worldwide.
