Reptile / Lurch of the year
Reptile / Lurch of the Year is a campaign organized by the German Society for Herpetology and Terrarium Science . V. (DGHT) was launched in 2006 and is largely supported by the DGHT-AG "Field Herpetology and Species Protection". She receives technical support from the relevant Austrian and Swiss professional associations (ÖGH and KARCH), the Natural History Museum in Luxembourg and in Germany from NABU and BUND .
The “ Reptile of the Year” is usually chosen alternately with the “ Lurch of the Year”. Deviating from 2007 and 2008 successively two Lurcharten were nominated for going out to the World Conservation Union IUCN and the Weltzooverband WAZA they reacted in 2008 proclaimed international "Year of the Frog" (Year of the Frog). Two amphibian species followed each other in 2018 and 2019.

In addition, several reptile and amphibian species were already " animal of the year ": In Germany in 1998 the " toad " ( yellow-bellied toad and Rotbauchunke shared), 2000 Äskulapnatter and in Switzerland in 2005, the sand lizard and 2013, the midwife toad .
