Dragonfly of the year

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The dragonfly of the year has been chosen since 2011 by the Association for the Environment and Nature Conservation Germany (BUND) together with the Society of German-speaking Odonatologists (GdO). As with comparable campaigns on “ Nature of the Year ”, the representative highlighting a certain species of this group of animals is intended to draw attention to environmental issues and ecological connections.

The choice of the first dragonfly of the year, the fire dragonfly , is justified, for example, by the fact that the species can be used as an indicator of climate change . The warmth-loving Mediterranean species has spread northward since the 1990s and is now also found in northern Germany. At the same time, it is pointed out that species with different ecological demands suffer population and area losses as a result of climate changes.
