Zoo Animal of the Year
Zoo Animal of the Year is a species protection campaign in Germany, which was organized by the Zoological Society for Species and Populations Protection . V. (ZGAP), the Deutsche Tierparkgesellschaft e. V. (DTG) and the Association of German Zoo Funders e. V. (GdZ) was launched in 2016 in the Nordhorn Zoo . The zoo animal of the year is chosen by the ZGAP. When choosing the “Zoo Animal of the Year”, the ZGAP takes into account animal species that are highly endangered. Many zoos and other institutions draw attention to the respective campaign with a motif poster and two conservation project posters.
For example, the species protection campaign “Zoo Animal of the Year 2016 - the Leopard” supported specific conservation projects. In order to finance this, donations were raised in the participating zoos and on the website. In addition, the couple also gave project partners money themselves. Before the campaign started, around 40,000 euros were available for two leopard projects.
In addition, the zoos advertise the “Zoo Animal of the Year” and ensure the survival of the species through conservation breeding.
