Endangered livestock breed of the year
The Endangered Livestock Breed of the Year has been selected annually since 1984 (originally as Pet of the Year ) by the Society for the Conservation of Old and Endangered Pet Breeds (GEH) to draw attention to the decline in these cultural breeds . With this selection, it is particularly important to point out those domestic farm animals that need to be preserved because of the agrobiodiversity in order to have this genetic reserve available in the future.
The selection is made according to the endangerment of the breed or the decline in breeding. The proclamation of the Breeds of the Year by the GEH is intended to result in media coverage for the respective breeds and thus improve the conditions for preservation.
