Pet of the year
In various countries, associations or clubs choose a pet of the year each year , either to carry out information and protection campaigns about this breed over the course of a year or to reward a specific pet, for example at the Pet of the Year Award of the Louisiana Veterinary, which has been presented since 1992 Medical Association .
The German Society for the Preservation of Old and Endangered Pet Breeds (GEH) has selected a farm animal breed as Pet of the Year since 1984 in order to draw attention to the decline of this breed. Today the list continues under the new name Endangered Livestock Breed of the Year .
A similar concept exists in Austria through the selection of the farm animal of the year by the Austrian Nature Conservation Union .
Since 2016, the foundation Bündnis Mensch & Tier has been drawing attention to the species-specific needs of domestic and farm animal species , as well as their cultural and social significance, and has chosen the chicken for 2016 , the dog in 2017 , the sheep in 2018 , the horse in 2019 and the guinea pig in 2020 to pet of the year .
