The Rhön sheep is a typical Rhön breed of sheep . It is characterized by the black head that is unwolled up to the ears. The Rhön sheep is a medium-sized to large, long-legged and hornless sheep that is excellently adapted to a harsh low mountain range. Its flesh is considered tender, mild and spicy.

It is considered to be one of the oldest livestock breeds in Germany. In 1844 it was written in the files of the Hochstift Fulda : “The common sheep of the Rhön farmer is a common German sheep of a peculiar kind, which is known even abroad under the name 'Rhön sheep'. It is yellow-white with a black head without horns, wears a coarse, slightly curled, not very elastic wool, is of a large build, strong-boned and capable of fattening ”.

From the end of the 19th century, however, the number of Rhön sheep quickly declined until only about 300 animals were registered in herd books in 1960, but afterwards an upward trend began again. In the GDR , the Rhön sheep was systematically pushed back by a central breeding program, but the value of the sheep breed was later recognized and a breeding community was founded. By 2003 the population grew to 202 bucks and 6780 ewes.

In recent years, the Rhön sheep has become a popular figure in the region as part of regional marketing in the Rhön ; today the total number is in the five-digit range. A bizarre dispute about the comic Rhön sheep Rhönhilde : The question of whether the figure should be drawn and published with black or white legs, busy lawyers, a district administrator and a member of the Bundestag. Ultimately, the dispute was settled to the satisfaction of all parties without the threatened injunction and claims for damages.

In 1991 the Rhön sheep was declared "Endangered Livestock Breed of the Year" by the Society for the Preservation of Old and Endangered Domestic Animal Breeds (GEH).
