Breeding history

The horse breed Rottaler originates from the Lower Bavarian Rottal and goes back to the 9th century. The first mention of the breed term "Rottaler horse" comes from the year 1872, before that the horses bred in the Rottal were called Rottaler, there were a variety of different horse types with certain characteristics. The horses with Arab bloodlines, accompanied by different crossings, served as the basis for breeding the Rottaler. As the basis for the breeding of the Rottaler, all horses bred around Rottal were previously referred to as Rottaler, so the breed name was given a concrete meaning for the first time, even if the actual breed term was only mentioned at the end of the 19th century. In the 16th century the landrace was supposed to be refined. For this purpose, Duke Albrecht IV had valuable stallions distributed to monastery courtyards in 1558. Important impulses for breeding of Rottalers came both from the military, where the powerful all-purpose horse like for the artillery (z. B. in and also for the light cavalry Chevauleger was used), but also from local farmers who mostly about the mares possessed and loved to breed for their own purposes.

Along with the East Frisian horse, the Rottaler is the oldest historically mentioned German horse breed. It has been bred on the basis of Hungarian prey horses with Arab bloodlines since the 10th century with various crossings.

The Rottaler horse was declared “Endangered Livestock Breed of the Year” by the Society for the Preservation of Old and Endangered Domestic Animal Breeds (GEH) in 2000 .

At the end of the twentieth century, the breeding of the Rottaler was essentially absorbed by the Bavarian Warmblood . The Rottaler is now (2005) threatened with extinction and the rarest horse breed in Europe. Hobby breeders try to preserve the Rottaler as a breed, especially in Bavaria. The state of Bavaria subsidizes the keeping of Rottalers financially. In 2017 there were 26 broodmares and 4 stallions. The total number of registered and registered Rottaler horses is 80 animals.
