The Hinterwälder-Rind , also simply Hinterwälder , is an old land plot of the domestic cattle .

The Hinterwälder cattle is said to have developed from the Celtic cattle . Its area of origin is the southern Black Forest , where it is still kept today. Like the Vorderwälder cattle, it has adapted perfectly to the conditions there. The cows are small-framed and have a height at the withers of 115 to 125 cm with a weight of 380 to 480 kg and an annual milk yield of around 3000 kg. The males have an instep height of about 130-135 cm with a mass of 750 kg and a daily gain of 950 g. The head is usually white, the rest of the fur light yellow to dark red-brown on a white background, spotted. Back forests are very frugal and long-lived. The cows are the longest-lived in Germany.

The Hinterwälder cattle was declared "Endangered Livestock Breed of the Year" by the Society for the Conservation of Old and Endangered Domestic Animal Breeds (GEH) in 1992 . This breed is threatened with extinction. In order to preserve the breed, the state of Baden-Württemberg pays housing premiums. The Dortmund Zoo has a small population of this breed, as does the Stuttgart Wilhelma (zoo). The Naturland Foundation Saar holds in her Landschaftspflegehof in landscaped grounds Hofgut Imsbach more than 100 animals, probably the largest herd in southwestern Germany. In Switzerland, ProSpecieRara and the Swiss Hinterwälder Zuchtverein take care of the preservation of this breed of cattle. As a typical dual-purpose cattle (milk and meat use), it has been experiencing a small renaissance for some time.

After a long stagnation at around 700 animals, the population in Germany halved in the ten years up to 2018, however, to 394 female and 12 male animals. On the other hand, a breeding line with 1858/77 animals, mainly used for maintaining the countryside and serving at best for meat production, developed more strongly.
