Breed key (beef)
The breed key is used to catalog the cattle breeds . It consists of up to a three-digit number. There is also an abbreviation of two or three letters that was entered in the inventory register.
Since 2002, the entry of the breed code in the cattle passport has been required by law in Germany . According to the German Cattle Traffic Ordinance , in addition to the data that must be recorded under EU law , the breed key must be reported by the keeper immediately after the identification , i.e. usually after the ear tag has been affixed, to the competent authority or its authorized agency and entered in his inventory register. This is to ensure the traceability of the origin of a cattle, which is particularly important with regard to the fight against BSE . The breed codes are cataloged in Appendix 6 to the Cattle Traffic Ordinance, which has been supplemented since the announcement of March 3, 2010 and partly updated in its names:
