The Montbéliard cattle breed is named after the Montbéliard region in France.

It is a medium to large framed dual purpose breed ( cows approx. 700 kg at approx. 136 cm height at the withers , bulls approx. 1000 kg, approx. 148 cm height at the withers) with a stronger emphasis on milk production . The color of the animals is pied red and white, with a white head.

The breed originated from the crossing of land races of the Franche-Comté with Bernese Simmentalers at the beginning of the 18th century. This also explains the similarity to the Simmental. In 1889 the breed was officially recognized and a herd book was opened.

In the 1970s, Red Holstein were occasionally crossed into the breed. At the same time, bulls of the breed were occasionally used in Simmental cattle , which was usually not very successful. In the 1990s, the Montbéliard breed was used to cross the breeds Red Danish dairy cattle and Vorderwälder .
