The Norman cattle , also called Normande or Norman breed , is a breed of cattle .

The breed is native to the Normandy region of northern France . According to legend, the Norman cattle descend from the cattle that the Scandinavian Normans brought to Normandy. The fact is that the breed of cattle was bred from regional livestock in the 19th century.

The breed is now a dual purpose ( milk and meat ) breed with an emphasis on milk yield. The milk is particularly suitable for making cheese .

Characteristics

The animals have maroon to black spots on a white background. The head is light, the eyes are surrounded by a dark spot (eye spot, called "glasses" / lunette ).

  • Milk production from 3rd lactation 8,000 kg with 4.30% fat and 3.50% protein.
  • Cows weigh about 700 kg, height at the withers about 140 cm
  • Bulls weigh about 1100 kg, height at the withers about 152 cm
