Dual use Red Holstein or Rotbuntes Niederungsrind is a red and white domestic cattle - breed of northern and central Germany. Lots of the breed are the Red Holstein lowland cattle and the Red Holstein Holstein lowland cattle .

breed

The breed was mainly kept in Schleswig-Holstein , Rhineland and Westphalia . The individual breeding areas have their own breeding history and were only combined in 1934.

Since around 1970, Holstein bulls have been crossed into the breed . This crossbreeding was so successful that the offspring from this today are a color variant of the Holstein cattle with the name Red Holstein.

In the Netherlands and Schleswig-Holstein, the breed continues to be bred with a maximum gene content of 25% of Holstein cattle. The animals are identified as DN (dual use) because they are better able to fatten than the Holstein cattle. However, the breed is in decline.

Average production of the cows (2001): 6324 kg milk / year with 4.27% fat and 3.45% protein. The milk yield is around 1000 kg milk / year less than that of Red Holstein .
