Lakenvelder beef
The Lakenvelder beef is a breed of cattle from the Netherlands .
Lakenvelder cattle are mostly black in color with a wide white band (belt) in the middle. About a quarter of the animals are red-brown in color and also have the characteristic white belt. Its origins are said to go back to the "Gurtenvieh" described in Switzerland and Austria . Dutch nobles verfrachteten belts cattle cattle from mountain farms in the Swiss Appenzell and in the Austrian Tyrol in the Netherlands . The Dutch were very possessive of their belted cattle and did not export them. Lakenvelder are known for their milk and fattening qualities. The heyday of breeding was around 1750 . Today's breeds are more productive than the Lakenvelder, but there are small initiatives to save the breed.
