The Hereford beef comes from Herefordshire in England, Great Britain, where it is cultivated since the 17th century. From the original working cattle , the Hereford became beef cattle because it is undemanding, adaptable and climate-tolerant in keeping. It is the most widespread breed of beef cattle in the world and can be found in North and South America (Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay), Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa.

If it originally comes from cool, humid Britain with a temperate climate, it can also be successfully kept in other climates. They are the most common beef cattle breed in the more temperate latitudes of Australia and New Zealand, and are very popular with cattle breeders in the southwestern United States and in central and eastern Argentina. In the original breeding area, however, the breed is classified as endangered by the British Rare Breeds Survival Trust .

The genetically polled Hereford cattle were bred as an alternative to dehorning .

The breed is known for its quality meat and excellent maternal characteristics. Herefords are very good natured, which makes them much easier to deal with compared to other breeds. The meat quality is very good and rivals that of the more aggressive Aberdeen Angus , another British breed whose meat is known for its marbling .

From the 1930s, among other things, Hereford cattle were used in the breeding of the Kazakh white-headed cattle .

The World Hereford Council is based in Great Britain, with General Secretary Jan Wills from New Zealand.

The crossing of Hereford cattle with Brahman (Zebu) cattle is called Braford .
