The Pustertaler Schecken or Pustertaler Sprinzen are a breed of domestic cattle .
The breed was bred in the Pustertal and its side valleys by crossing Swiss Eringer cattle into the native landrace. The animals are predominantly white with chestnut to light brown or black plates on the sides of the trunk, which often dissolve into small spots towards the edge (sparks). The cows weigh approx. 600–700 kg, bulls approx. 900–1100 kg. The breed is mostly used for meat production in suckler cow husbandry. Only a few cows are milked.
In the 19th century Pinzgauer crossed . The exclusion from the licensing (1927) by decree of the agricultural inspectorate led to the collapse of this breed of cattle. Only since about 1984 has the breeding of this breed been given more importance.
The breed is now bred in Germany , Austria and Italy ( South Tyrol ). The population of the breed has stabilized at a low level.
