The landscape maintenance farm (see also landscape maintenance ) is a nature conservation institution that wants to preserve historically grown cultural landscapes and thereby also has a creative influence on the natural and cultural-historical characteristics of the open landscape. Examples of such landscape types are the Hutewald , the heathland , the moor landscape or the landscape park based on the principles of the Ferme Ornée .

aims

The main goals of a landscape maintenance farm are the environmentally friendly management of agricultural areas and the maintenance of the existing cultural landscape through grazing. As a rule, stocks ( cattle , sheep , goats ) from old breeds of farm animals are used, as these are usually more robust than modern, economically optimized species. At the same time, the use of these farm animal breeds, which are often threatened with extinction, is linked to their breeding and thus their conservation. Examples are the Bentheimer Landschaf , the Thuringian forest goat or the Vosges cattle .

Other goals of a landscape maintenance farm are the preservation of old cultures and varieties for posterity. As a rule, the farms are managed ecologically and with the help of special care measures, which benefits the location-typical animal and plant species.

activities

Through targeted grazing in connection with mechanical maintenance work, attempts are made to counteract the onset of succession on the areas and to promote the botanical diversity of the landscape. By including already bushy, covered or wooded areas in the respective landscape types, conditions are created that z. B. also secures the necessary habitats for ground-breeding bird species.

Landscape maintenance farms are often operated in cooperation with educational and further training institutions that look after, qualify and secure jobs for low-skilled or disabled people within the framework of landscape maintenance measures.
