Old coat of arms (until 1974); today the coat of arms of the district Tholey

The first traces of a settlement in the area of today's municipality Tholey go back to the Celts (see also Iovantucarus ). Multiple finds prove an extensive settlement by the Romans. In 2002, for example, new knowledge about the “Schweichhaus” settlement complex was gained during an emergency excavation. In the Middle Ages, large parts of what is now Saarland were subject to tribute to Tholey Abbey . A castle was built on the Schaumberg to protect the abbey . The manors were Lorraine and Kurtrier .

Origin of name

In a script from the year 634 (Testament of Grimo) mentioned as Taulegio , the place name is derived from Tegolegium , "brick-covered building".

Incorporations

As part of the Saarland regional and administrative reforms which were previously independent nine municipalities Weiler , hasborn-dautweiler , Lindscheid , Neipel, chafing , Sotzweiler , Theley , Tholey and About Roth-Niederhofen joined forces to present community of Tholey.

Church history

According to legend, Saint Wendelin is said to have been the founder and first abbot of the Benedictine Abbey of St. Mauritius , but this is not historically proven. The abbey was first mentioned in a document in the "Testament of Adalgisel Grimo " from  634 . The abbey is therefore the oldest monastery in what is now Germany. In 1794 the monastery was closed after being destroyed by the French. Since 1949 there is again a Benedictine monastery of the Beuron congregation in the village .

Jewish history

A Jewish community existed in Tholey from the 18th century to around 1940. A first Jewish family was mentioned in 1729. In 1843, 88 Jewish people lived in Tholey (9% of the total population of 952), in 1895 there were 91. A synagogue was inaugurated on December 4, 1863 by district rabbi Kahn from Trier . A Jewish denominational school had existed since 1876. In 1925 there were still 50 members of the Jewish community, in 1935 there were 41 members. Due to the increasing disenfranchisement during the Nazi era and due to the economic boycott, many moved to other cities or emigrated. After the deportations , at least 20 of the Jewish residents born in Tholey or who had lived there for a long time were murdered. The synagogue was sold in 1937 and later demolished. A house was built on its foundation walls on Trierer Strasse. On April 21, 2015 Gunter Demnig laidstumbling blocks in Tholey.
