Oberthal is a Saarland municipality in the St. Wendel district and is located about 35 km northeast of Saarbrücken . With just over 6,000 inhabitants, Oberthal is the smallest municipality in the Saarland.
The Bostalsee is a few kilometers from Oberthal.
geography
With the low moorland Oberthaler Bruch , the densely wooded community has owned one of the largest nature reserves in Saarland since December 1984 . The "Weiherbruch und Rohrbachwiesen" nature reserve with a size of 19.68 hectares has existed in the neighboring municipality of Namborn in the district of Namborn since November 1983 and extends to parts of the municipality of Oberthal (district of Güdesweiler). The “Rohrbacher Wiesen” water protection area of the neighboring municipality of Namborn also has an impact on the area of the municipality of Oberthal (district of Güdesweiler).
The Blies flows through the village , one of its springs is located in the Orletal in the district of Gronig . Therefore, part of the Oberthal community is also affected by an ordinance to protect the floodplain on the Blies.
The entire Oberthal municipality is located in the Saar-Hunsrück Nature Park .

history
Until 1814 Oberthal was assigned to the canton of Tholey , in the Moselle department .
The then independent community of Steinberg -ckenhardt did not belong to the Saar area from 1920 to 1935, just like Freisen , Losheim , Nonnweiler , Wadern , Weiskirchen , Perl , Kirrberg and Bruchhof-Sanddorf . After the Second World War, it was incorporated into Saarland on October 1, 1946 (see also the list of municipalities affected by the connection to Saarland in 1946 ).

On January 1, 1974, Gronig , Güdesweiler and Steinberg-ceiling hardt were incorporated.

Culture and sights
The little deemed worth seeing wild woman cave , the local museum Millpetersch house and the chapel with good fountain of Celtic in the district Güdesweiler, the remains Ringwallanlage on Momberg in the district Gronig, a mineral archaeological site ( sanguine ) on Leißberg and components of the above local sculptures street .
Regular events
Every year on the first weekend in May, the International Oberthal Pottery and Ceramics Market takes place in the center of Oberthal.
Sports
The men's team of Kegelfreunde Oberthal eV is the German record champion in the First Bundesliga . The women were also able to win the title several times.
