Kreuzbau, chapel with crucifixion group and station of the cross The original chapel was considered a place of pilgrimage in the Middle Ages. Its foundations and parts of the masonry were exposed in the 1990s. A simple wooden cross and a sandstone altar were added. The current chapel was built between 1761 and 1764 and was probably built by a hermit. Behind the square hall building with a tent roof is a well that was known as a healing spring before the chapel was built. A Way of the Cross runs from the chapel to the parish church in the village, the 14 stations of which used to be in the old chapel.

Catholic Church of St. Stephen St. Stephanus was built in 1823 as a single-nave hall church with a tower on the west side. As early as 1844 the tower had to be demolished due to its dilapidation. In 1898 the nave was enlarged by Wilhelm Hector as the community had grown significantly. The nave was also given a transept and a larger choir. Between 1923 and 1925 the church was expanded again, this time based on designs by the architects Ludwig Becker and Anton Falkowski. The three-aisled hall church was built in the style of historicism and mainly uses neo-Gothic style elements. The nave is divided into a central nave with four bays with ribbed vaults and two side aisles with three bays each. This is followed by a transept and a five-sided choir with a polygonal finish. A church tower with a pointed spire sits in the west in the aisle. Oberthal, St. Stephanus (40) .JPG

Memorial plaque Johann Becker Johann Becker (1902–1972) and his family rebelled against an annexation of the Saar area to Hitler's Germany. Because of his "political attitude" Becker was sentenced to prison in 1936 and was then housed in several accountancy camps until May 1945. In 2008 the Oberthal community erected a plaque on his house in his honor.
