description

The 37.5 m high tower stands approx. 120 m southeast of the summit and allows a wide view of the surrounding area. The view extends in the north to the Hunsrück , in the west to the Saargau and beyond to the French nuclear power plant Cattenom and in the south to Saarbrücken . When the weather is very clear, it is possible to see the Vosges .

The tower contains a memorial to the soldiers of Germany and France who fell in the World Wars , which was designed by the sculptor Richard Hoffmann. As a Franco-German meeting place, the tower should be a symbol of friendship between the two countries.

After the renovation work between 2010 and 2013, the tower is accessible via a specially built staircase or barrier-free via a panoramic elevator and another elevator in the upper part of the building. During opening times, a turnstile leads to the staircase and the external elevator, both of which lead to the 7th floor. There is another staircase in the narrower part of the tower and a second elevator to the viewing platform , which is on the 11th floor at a height of 34.3 m. Panorama boards are attached to its parapet.

The antennas, which were previously attached to the tower itself, were relocated to a steel structure on the top of the tower during the renovation work, giving the tower a total height of 52 m.

The “Schaumberg Alm” gastronomy located on the Schaumberg plateau was opened in June 2012 and is known as the “highest inn in Saarland”.

Inside the tower there is now space for two exhibitions: the “Summit Meeting” exhibition on the 3rd floor deals with the Schaumberg and Franco-German relations, and another exhibition on the 5th and 6th floors is dedicated to “COzwo and Co” is dedicated to the topic of "climate protection" and is operated by the Saarland Ministry of Economics, Labor, Energy and Transport.

history

Original tower with crucifix
Schaumberg tower before renovation (2007)

In 1912, forty years after the Franco-Prussian War , it was decided to build a tower on the mountain plateau in honor of the then reigning Emperor Wilhelm II . The foundation stone was laid on June 28, 1914. However, completion was interrupted by the First World War. All that remained was a 5 m high building ruin, on which a tower with an integrated war memorial chapel was built from 1927 according to the construction plan of the Saarbrücken architect Moritz Gombert . The 36 meter high Schaumberg tower was inaugurated on August 24, 1930 by the Trier bishop Franz Rudolf Bornewasser . The larger-than-life crucifix set in the central arch of the tower was striking . It is thirteen feet high and shows the crucified Christ as a winner . The design for the cross came from Johann Mettler from Morbach / Hunsrück .

The Schaumberg Tower was not destroyed in the Second World War , but an incorrect construction led to its closure. A new construction of the tower was planned, which was intended as a symbol of German-French friendship and as a memorial for the victims of both peoples in the world wars. Architects from both nations took part in the ideas competition, the first prize of which was awarded to the French architect Jean-Marie Collin from Nancy . However, the design was never carried out.

In 1972 the tower had to be demolished because it was in disrepair. The undamaged crucifix should be blown up. However, the construction workers, all from the Catholic villages in the vicinity or of Italian origin, refused to blow up the symbol of faith. So the crucifix was removed undamaged, stored briefly in a shed at the edge of the mountain plateau, and later near the motorway junction at Sotzweiler erected. It is easily visible from the A1 federal motorway (coming from the south, right between junction 140 Tholey and the Schaumberg-Kreuz car park).

For the construction of today's tower, the old tower was partially removed, encased with concrete and rebuilt to its previous height. On September 19, 1976, the abbot of Tholey Hrabanus Heddergott , the bishop of Verdun Pierre Boillon and the auxiliary bishop of Trier, Karl Heinz Jacoby, celebrated a pontifical office to mark the inauguration of the tower .

In 2007 the tower had to be closed to visitors because it did not meet the requirements for modern fire protection. The renovation measures started in July 2010 were concluded with the 9-11. August 2013 took place the reopening party.

In the days after the terrorist attacks of November 13, 2015 in Paris by the IS terrorist group , the Schaumberg Tower shone in the French national colors of blue-white-red at night to express solidarity with the neighboring country as part of Franco-German friendship.
