Inkerman ( Ukrainian Інкерман ; Russian Инкерман , Crimean Inkerman ( "cave fortress")) is a town on the peninsula of Crimea . From 1976 until the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991 it was called Belokamensk ("White Rock"). Inkerman lies on both sides of the Chorna River about two kilometers east of its confluence with the Sevastopol Bay . Administratively, the 10,452 population counting place belongs to the Rajon Balaklava , one of the four city districts of Sevastopol .
Dwelling caves
Inkerman is known for the 300 or so old cave dwellings built on top of each other . Two churches carved into the rock lie between these apartments . On one of the rocks are the remains of a late medieval fortress , which was built either by the Genoese or the Principality of Theodoro . In 1850 a Russian Orthodox monastery was built below .
Battle of Inkerman
During the Crimean War on November 5, 1854, the Russians trapped in Sevastopol attempted a sortie against the British troops, which led to the Battle of Inkerman . After initial success, the Russians were pushed back again by the intervention of the French . The main cause of the defeat, however, is said to have been the poor cooperation between the commanding officers, namely Peter Andrejewitsch von Dannenberg and Alexander Sergejewitsch Menshikov . Due to confusing and contradicting orders, a coordinated general attack, planned in detail , by the divisions rising individually from the Kilenbalka Gorge ( Gorchakov , Pavlov , Soimonov , Zabokritzki ) turned into a more or less random sequence of individual actions that broke up one after the other at the Allied defense. As a result of this disaster, Menshikov was relieved of his command.
A few days earlier, on October 23, there was already a battle between the Russians and the British which went down in history as Little Inkerman . The Russians attacked the position of the British 2nd Division at Inkerman, but were driven back by heavy artillery fire. The Russians lost 270 men, the British 100.
coat of arms
The city's coat of arms shows Bishop Clemens of Rome , tied to an anchor. According to legend, the saint was sentenced to forced labor in the quarries near Inkerman for his Roman missionary work. When he converted many people there to Christianity, he was tied to an anchor and drowned in the Black Sea. The cave monastery in Inkerman bears his name.
