The Sevastopol bay (Ukrainian Севастопольска затока / Sewastopolska zatoka ; Russian Севастопольская бухта / Sewastopolskaja buchta ) is a narrow bay in the south of the peninsula Krim , which is 8 km to the mouth of Chorna cuts into the interior.
The bay divides the Ukrainian port city of the same name into a north and a south half. On the latter, the center of the city of Sevastopol extends over several hills. The north and south halves of Sevastopol Bay are connected by a regular ferry.
The port was built from 1772 to 1783 after the acquisition of Crimea in the 5th Russo-Turkish War (1768–1774). Since then there has been a base for the Russian Navy and especially the Black Sea Fleet .
