Gnomon . Critical journal for all of classical antiquity is the most important German review magazine in the field of classical antiquity .

The Gnomon has been published since 1925, first by Verlag Weidmann (then Berlin), and since 1949 by the Munich publisher CH Beck . The magazine appears in 8 issues a year. Since volume 22 (1950), the odd numbers have included a bibliographical supplement of the new publications in the field in addition to the usual articles (reviews, obituaries and news) . The Bibliographical Supplement lists "all noteworthy printed works that can be bought individually, as far as they become known to the editors", dissertations (which do not appear in bookshops) "and journal articles ... but only those which are sent in or displayed to the editors".
The model for the Gnomon was the British review magazine Classical Review , which has been published since 1887 . Since 1948, a second German-language review organ has been published in Austria, the Anzeiger für die Alteswissenschaft ( Anzeiger für die Alteswissenschaft) , which is significantly less important than the gnomon .
Many scholars have agreed that the list of abbreviations in the Gnomon is standard. Martin Bentz , Ruth Bielfeldt , Peter Eich , Hans-Joachim Gehrke , Christoph Horn , Martin Hose , Joseph Maran , Katharina Volk and Paul Zanker are currently the publishers of the magazine. The editors are Martin Hose and Oliver Schelske. Heinz-Werner Nörenberg held this position from the September 1968 edition until he left the company at the end of 2005.

Of the original sixteen publishers were after the seizure of power by the National Socialists dismissed in 1933 fourteen, partly for political or ideological reasons (as Ludwig Curtius and Werner Jaeger ). The remaining editors were Matthias Gelzer and Gerhart Rodenwaldt as well as Richard Harder , the previous editor-in-chief who had also been editor since 1930. During the Second World War , the composition of the editorial team changed several times. In 1940 the previous editor-in-chief, Erich Burck, took over the co- editing position , which he held until his death in 1994. In 1944 the last issue of the Gnomon appeared in succession. The first post-war edition in 1949 was published by Erich Burck, Matthias Gelzer and Friedrich Matz .
Gnomon Bibliographic Database
In 1994 Jürgen Malitz created the Gnomon Bibliographical Database in collaboration with the Gnomon editorial team and the CH Beck publishing house . More than 330,000 titles - monographs , articles in anthologies , journal articles and reviews - are listed therein. Bibliographical information from more than 200 leading antiquity journals and from periodicals that are not exclusively devoted to antiquity but regularly contain articles on antiquity are evaluated. An update takes place every year with an increased number of the evaluated journals and recorded bibliographical information. In addition, there are bibliographical information from series that have already been discontinued. Operation is in German or English . Since the beginning of 1996 there has also been the sister project Gnomon Online , which provides extracts from the database on the Internet. Distribution of the complete database as CD-ROM was discontinued in 2009; it has since been available for free download. Since 2019 - funded by the DFG and in cooperation with the Bavarian State Library in Munich - a new platform (GBD 2.0) has been available for research.
