Erich Burck (born November 30, 1901 in Grimma ; † January 10, 1994 in Kiel ) was a German classical philologist , professor and rector of the University of Kiel .

Life

Burck attended the Princely School in Grimma (1915–1921). Erich Burck studied classical philology in Leipzig from 1921 to 1925 . From 1925 to 1927 he was a trainee lawyer at the Kreuzschule in Dresden , then a trainee lawyer in Meißen . In 1928 he went as an assistant at the University of Muenster , where he was on 20 February 1931 habilitation was appointed and as Lecturer. During the National Socialist era , Burck joined various Nazi organizations, first with the SA in 1933 (until 1941). From April to October 1935 he represented Eduard Norden's chair in Berlin .

On December 19, 1935, Burck became associate professor at the Christian Albrechts University in Kiel . After joining the National Socialist People's Welfare in 1936 , the NSDAP in 1937 and the NSDDB in 1938 , he was appointed full professor and chair of classical philology in Kiel . During the Second World War he was an auxiliary and court officer of the Gestapo in Kiel from 1942 to 1945 . In 1941 he acted as acting dean of the theological faculty and from 1943 to 1945 as dean of the philosophical faculty. In 1945 he was classified in Category V ("unencumbered") by the Denazification Committee . He kept his chair and in 1946 vice-rector, 1961-62 Rector . Even after his retirement, he remained connected to Kiel University. In 1972 he received the university medal for his commitment and in 1982 he was also made an honorary senator.

In his research and perspective on ancient literature , Burck was particularly influenced by his academic teacher Richard Heinze . He dealt with ancient and humanistic value concepts as well as the values ​​and content of ancient historiography and poetry, etc. a. in the works of Virgil , Livius , Horace and Properz . He also devoted himself to Roman mannerism . As co-editor he was responsible for the renowned specialist journal Gnomon (from 1939) and the Zetemata series (from 1951).

In his scientific endeavors, Burck always endeavored to facilitate and promote cooperation between the university and grammar school in the field of Latin and Greek literature. He did this both in his role as chairman of the German Classical Philology Association (1952-1956), whose honorary chairman he was later appointed, and in his role as chairman of the Schleswig-Holstein State School Advisory Board. He also acted temporarily as an expert reviewer for the German Research Foundation and as a board member of the West German Rectors' Conference . Burck was also the second chairman of the Mommsen Society for many years .

For his scientific merits he was awarded honorary doctorates from the Universities of Athens and Rennes, the Orden Palmes Académiques and the Great Federal Cross of Merit (1987).

Erich Burck was able to speak fluently in Latin.

His grave is in the Eichhof park cemetery near Kiel.
