Eckard Lefèvre

Eckard Lefèvre (born September 3, 1935 in Hanover ) is a German classical philologist .

Lefèvre studied classical philology at the universities of Munich , Vienna and Kiel from 1956 to 1962 . In 1962 and 1963 he stayed in Rome on a scholarship . From 1963 to 1971 he was a research assistant, then a lecturer, and finally an adjunct professor in Kiel, where he completed his habilitation in 1967. In 1972 he was appointed Scientific Councilor and Professor. In 1974 he followed a call to the Saarland University . From 1977 until his retirement in 2003 he was Professor of Classical Philology at the University of Freiburg .

From 1981 to 1985 Lefèvre was the first chairman of the German Classical Philology Association . In 2000 the University of Strasbourg awarded him an honorary doctorate. From 2001 to 2003 he was first chairman of the Mommsen Society .

His main focus is on ancient drama and Augustan literature. He is co-editor of the Zetemata , ScriptOralia and NeoLatina series .
