Wilhelm Brambach

Wilhelm Brambach (born December 17, 1841 in Bonn , † February 26, 1932 in Karlsruhe ) was a German classical philologist , music historian and librarian .

Life

Wilhelm Brambach, son of the late 1890 piano tuner and organ builder Franz Jacob Brambach and brother of choral conductors and composers Caspar Joseph Brambach , studied after high school at the University of Bonn Classical Philology at Friedrich Ritschl and musicology at Heinrich Breidenstein . In 1864 he received his doctorate with a thesis on the Roman consulate .

As a result, Brambach was initially employed as an assistant at the Bonn University Library from 1862 to 1866 . Subsequently, in 1866 he became head (senior librarian) of the Freiburg University Library . At the same time, he taught at the University of Freiburg as an associate professor of classical philology, and since 1868 as a full professor. In 1872, Brambach was entrusted with the management of the Badische Hof- und Landesbibliothek in succession to Johann Christoph Döll , which he held until his retirement in 1904. Even after that, he remained head of the State Library's coin cabinet until 1921. Brambach died on February 26, 1932 at the age of 90 in Karlsruhe.

Act

Brambach's philological research concentrated mainly on the areas of epigraphy , rhythm , metrics and orthography . From a music-historical point of view, the studies of medieval music theory and practice as well as the history of the Reichenau singing school made during his time at the Badische Landesbibliothek based on the Reichenau manuscripts are significant . Although the details were outdated, his research based on exact textual criticism made a valuable contribution to the knowledge of medieval music tracts, for example by Berno and Hermann von Reichenau , and church choral music , especially Gregorian chant .

As library manager, Brambach demanded the independence of the librarian profession after he had learned at the University of Freiburg that librarianship and teaching post had become increasingly incompatible. In Karlsruhe he reorganized the Baden court and state library as well as the associated coin collection, whereby he also referred to the American concept of the public library . In 1872 the library was incorporated into the state administration and subordinated to the department of the Ministry of the Interior. In addition, it was renamed the Grand Ducal Court and State Library. In 1873, Brambach organized the relocation of the library from the Karlsruhe Palace to the collection building on Friedrichsplatz and ensured that the administration was comprehensively modernized, among other things. a. for a systematic listing of the inventory according to a classification of 24 main groups and 143 subgroups, for the provision of an alphabetical card catalog as well as for a modern usage regulation.

The library catalogs printed from 1875 onwards remain linked to Wilhelm Brambach's name. With their publication as regular new access registers, he successfully tried to win over users who did not live in the royal seat of the Grand Ducal Court and State Library.
