Jörg Rainer Fligge (born December 1, 1940 in Königsberg (Prussia) ) is a German historian and librarian .

Life

Jörg Rainer Fligge was born as the son of Pastor Armin Fligge and his wife Ursula, nee. Schroeter, born in Königsberg / East Prussia. After attending school in Cloppenburg i. O. and move to Bremen, he passed the Abitur at the old grammar school there in 1961. He studied history as well as philosophy and evangelical theology at the universities of Münster, Tübingen and Bonn. In Bonn, he was in 1972 with his dissertation, Duke Albrecht of Prussia and the Osiandrismus : 1522-1568 Dr. phil. PhD. Fligge decided to pursue an academic career in the library and had been working in various functions at the Duisburg University Library, which was being set up, since 1974. He was very committed to the construction planning. The then current topic of consideration of audiovisual media in academic libraries led him in 1980 to the audiovisual commission of the German Library Institute Berlin, for which he was chair from 1984–1989. In 1983, the cultural and public relations work of the Duisburg City Library moved him to a change and laid the foundation for his appointment as the successor to Klaus Bock as Chief Library Director of the City Library in Lübeck . He designed a library development plan based on the Wolfenbüttel model for the city library.

Restored under Flige's management: the coat hall of the Lübeck City Library

Under his leadership, the extensive old scientific holdings came back into focus, and Fligge took care of the restoration of the historical library rooms. In 1992 he was a co-founder of the Bibliotheca Baltica , a working group of libraries in the Baltic Sea region. Here he worked for several years as a board member.

The content of Fligge's numerous publications is primarily concerned with librarianship and the important question in Lübeck of the restitution of library holdings that were relocated and deported from Eastern Europe during the war. In the anthology Stadt und Bibliothek (1997), according to the review in the FAZ , he provided a remarkable overview of the librarianship of the Thomas Mann city of Lübeck, which can be regarded as exemplary for the development in many cities in the German Empire. In 1993 Fligge was appointed to the German-Russian Expert Commission for Restitution and Cooperation (for the library system), whose activities were later discontinued due to the Duma legislation. In his review of the anthology Westöstliche Bande (2011), Sven Kuttner emphasizes Fligge's contribution to the relocation of book stocks by the Red Army: "... his conclusion captivates with an admirable, wisdom-fed sense of reality." After all, there were returns from the countries of Armenia and Georgia, which included important pieces of Lübeck's urban identity. Since 2006 Fligge has devoted himself to studies of educational and cultural history during the Nazi era, especially in Lübeck.
