Caspar Joseph Brambach (born July 14, 1833 in Oberdollendorf ; † June 20, 1902 in Bonn ) was a German musician and composer .

Life

Brambach was born as the son of Franz Jacob Brambach and Gertrud Brambach, nee. Luckerath, born in the same year as Johannes Brahms . He received a scholarship from the Mozart Foundation for the promotion of young composers and was a student of Ferdinand Hiller and Carl Reinecke at the Cologne Conservatory before he became a teacher there in 1859. In 1861 he became municipal music director in Bonn, but gave up this position in 1869 to devote himself entirely to his compositions and musical life in Bonn. His marriage to Magdalena Gohr took place in 1861. From 1862 to 1877 he headed the men's choir "Concordia" and from 1861 to 1869 the municipal choir , which is now known as the Bonn Philharmonic Choir . Until his death, Brambach did not appear in public as a performing musician. He devoted himself entirely to his compositional work and the training of young musicians in private lessons. One of his most important students was Max von Schillings , who was tutored by him for some time during his high school days from 1879. Also from Friedrich Nietzsche is known that he asked Brambach for advice whether he should become a musician or a philologist. Brambach, whose works are almost forgotten today, was best known as a composer of works for male choirs . He also composed numerous songs, of which the Bergisches Heimatlied was one of his most famous. His instrumental works also found many admirers in the second half of the 19th century, and none other than the conductor Hans von Bülow spoke out in sincere appreciation for Brambach's piano concerto. Brambach's tonal language corresponds to the post-Mendelssohn era, whereby the pronounced cantable style stands out from the crowd of its contemporaries. His tomb is in the Poppelsdorf cemetery in Bonn, below the Kreuzberg church. The relief is signed K. MENSER, CÖLN . The lavish tomb that was donated bears the inscription “Dedicated by German singers”.
