Clemens Zintzen

Clemens Zintzen (born June 24, 1930 in Aachen ) is a German classical philologist .

Life

From 1952 to 1958 Zintzen studied classical philology, philosophy and German in Cologne and Bonn. In 1957 he was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD. From 1958 to 1961 he worked as a high school teacher before returning to specialist science and qualifying as a professor in 1963. The following year he received his first lectureship at the University of Cologne . In 1968 he accepted a position as scientific advisor and professor in Mannheim, in 1969 he accepted a call as full professor for classical philology at the University of Saarland . In 1972 he moved to the University of Cologne as a professor of classical philology, where he worked until his retirement in 1994 and continued to teach regularly until the end of the 2010 summer semester.

Clemens Zintzen has been a full member of the Academy of Sciences and Literature in Mainz since 1977 . From 1986 to 1993 he was Vice President and from 1993 to 2005 President of the Mainz Academy, and from 1998 to 2002 also Chairman of the Union of German Academies of Sciences . In 1981 he was also appointed a member of the Mediaeval Academy of America . In 2003 he was awarded the Bene merenti in silver medal by the Bavarian Academy of Sciences for his services to the academies . In 2000 Zintzen was awarded the Ausonius Prize . In 1998 Jürgen Zöllner awarded him the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany (1st class). Zintzen is a member of the German Academy of Science and Engineering (Acatech).

In his research, Zintzen u. a. with the philosophy of Neoplatonism , the history of reception and the Florentine Renaissance .
