Jan Felix Gaertner
Jan Felix Gaertner (born March 30, 1976 in Bonn ) is a German classical philologist .
After studying Classical Philology and Romance Studies at the Universities of Bonn and Oxford , he received his doctorate in 2002 as a DPhil . His dissertation, a commentary on Ovid's first book Epistulae ex Ponto , was supervised by Oliver Lyne . His doctorate was followed by a nine-month guest stay at the Thesaurus Linguae Latinae in Munich and a one-year stay at the Department of Classical Philology at the University of Friborg , where Gaertner worked on an edition of the Ethnika des Stephanos von Byzantium . From 2004 to 2010 Gaertner worked as a research assistant or assistant to Marcus Deufert at the University of Leipzig . After his habilitation (2011) and two professorships in Heidelberg ( Jonas Grethlein ) and Bamberg ( Sabine Föllinger ), he moved to Harvard University in spring 2012 ; there he was a Feodor Lynen Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and Lecturer on the Classics. Since summer 2013 he has been Professor of Classical Philology with a focus on Latin Philology at the University of Cologne .
Past and current research focuses on ancient exile literature, the relationship between law and literature, and ancient comedy and historiography.
In 2019 Gaertner was elected to the Academia Europaea .
