Woldemar Görler
Woldemar Görler (born October 4, 1933 in Berlin ) is a German classical philologist . He is a professor emeritus at Saarland University .
Life
From 1952 to 1957 Woldemar Görler studied classical philology and philosophy at the Free University of Berlin and as a scholarship holder of the British Council at University College London . After the first state examination, he was a student trainee until 1959 and at the same time a lecturer for classical philology at the Free University of Berlin. After the second state examination in 1959, he returned to the Free University of Berlin as a research assistant. There he received his doctorate in 1962 with a thesis on Menander . In 1963 he switched to the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg as an assistant. In 1966/67 he was a Junior Fellow at the Center for Hellenic Studies in Washington, DC. With research on Cicero's philosophy, he completed his habilitation in July 1970 in Heidelberg.
This was followed by substitute professorships in Heidelberg (1972) and Hamburg (1974/75). In 1973 Görler was appointed adjunct professor and finally scientific councilor and professor (AH 3). From 1977 to 1979 he was dean of the Faculty of Oriental Studies and Classical Studies. In 1978 he was offered a position at the Reich University of Leiden , which he refused. From 1979 to 1980 he was a member of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton . In the 1980 summer semester he was appointed full professor of classical philology at Saarland University. Görler retired in September 1999.
His research interests are Greco-Roman comedy, Hellenistic philosophy, narrative theory applied to historiography and epic poetry, Latin poetry and Cicero's philosophical writings.
