Robert Schröter

Robert Schröter (born May 7, 1921 in Oberbergstrasse , Soest district , † February 16, 2014 in Münster-Hiltrup ) was a German classical philologist .

Robert Schröter, the son of a ship mechanic, grew up in Westphalia. He attended the elementary school in Westönnen (Soest district), from May 1933 to Easter 1935 the Franciscan College in Warendorf , from Easter 1935 to December 1937 the Franciscan School Abroad in Vlodrop (Netherlands) and from December 1937 to March 1939 the Marien-Gymnasium in Werl . After graduating, he did the Reich Labor Service until November 1939 and then worked as a tutor in Lenningsen (Unna district). He was also an intern at two machine factories in Werl.

In February 1940, he volunteered as a Marine - cadets and took up his duties on 24 September 1940 in Stralsund Dänholm at ( Crew 40 ). He served in the navy until the end of the war (including one of five survivors of U 671 ) and was taken prisoner of war, from which he was released on November 7, 1945.

From the winter semester 1945 Schröter studied classical philology and philosophy at the Philipps University of Marburg , where he worked as a research assistant from October 1948. On March 1, 1950 he was promoted to Dr. phil. obtained his doctorate and then taught Latin and Greek style exercises as a lecturer (until the summer semester 1954). In 1959 he completed his habilitation at the University of Cologne with the text Studies on Varronic Etymology . In 1962 he went to the Saarland University as a full professor of classical philology . In 1968 he moved to the newly founded Ruhr University Bochum , where he retired in 1986 . He spent his retirement in Westbevern .
