history

The first documented mention of settlements in the Lenningsen area is from 1486. In the treasure book of Grafschaft Mark , farms are named, some of which still exist today.

During the Thirty Years War (1618-1648) the area around Lenningsen was plundered and ravaged by the plague. Much of the population died of disease or was killed. Apart from the old manor Brüggen , no buildings from this period have survived.

The Ermelingschule was a single-class primary school that was closed on July 1, 2015. It was established in 1840 and was the oldest school in the Bönen municipality.

On January 1, 1847, the previously independent places Bramey and Lenningsen were merged to form the new municipality of Bramey-Lenningsen.

In 1876 industrialization found its way into the village, in the form of the Dortmund - Welver - Soest railway line , which ran through the village.

In 1901 the Lenningsen station was built, which was the target of Allied bombing raids several times during World War II , as trains carrying weapons, ammunition and troops ran on this route. The station remained intact; however, three civil homes were completely destroyed and several others were damaged.

The operation of the station was also severely restricted by English low-flying planes, who repeatedly attacked trains that were destroyed on the railway line. After the war, train operations were resumed, initially only for transporting refugees and allied troops, and from 1946 also for people.

The station was closed in 1962. On May 25, 1965, the British Queen Elizabeth II spent the night on her visit to Germany in a special train on the Lennings train station. She did not get out, but only waved briefly to the assembled villagers from the train window. The station then fell into disrepair until the first kindergarten in Lenningsen was set up in the former station building in 1996.

On January 1, 1968, the municipality of Bramey-Lenningsen, which had been enlarged by the manorial district of Bruges on September 20, 1928, was incorporated into the newly formed municipality of Bönen.

You can hike or cycle around Lenningsen very well, as a cycle and hiking trail has been laid out on the former railway line and leads to the district town of Unna. This route is also part of the long- distance cycle route in the Ruhr area .
