In the west it leads from Duisburg along the Rhine about 30 km north to Wesel . From there it is oriented 150 km eastwards on the northern border of the Ruhr area.

The circuit Ruhr part of the project Route of Industrial Heritage of the Ruhr Regional Association (RVR) . The Ruhr area circuit is consistently signposted. The symbol of the Ruhr area is used not only on small, approximately 20 cm large, rectangular signs, but also on some street signs.

Despite good signage, maps are useful when driving on the route because signs have either overgrown or fallen victim to vandalism. In some cases, especially in the northern section of the route along the Wesel-Datteln Canal , the signs are incomplete.

Since the tourist attractions are included in the network, shortcuts of up to 20 km are sometimes possible, which can save you a few kilometers. The Ruhr area circuit often crosses other long-distance cycle paths or runs together with them, which you can also use for orientation. For example, the Kaiser Route can be found in the southern part of the Ruhr , which runs from Aachen to Paderborn.

The new symbol of the cycle path is green, is entitled Rundkurs ruhrgebiet and shows a stylized colliery.

Transport links

The tour of the Ruhr is easy to reach on all sections by public transport. Railway connections exist u. a. in Duisburg, Essen, Dortmund, Hagen, Hamm, Werne, Lünen, Haltern and Wesel. In addition, the means of transport of the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR) are available. All sections of the Ruhr area's well-developed road network can be easily reached by car.

nature

Most of the Ruhr Area circuit leads along waterways and is therefore mostly flat. Only in the northeastern part, around Bergkamen and Unna, are there a few smaller elevations. In general, the entire route is in good condition, mostly with an asphalt surface , sometimes with fine gravel or cobblestones .

Attractions

Almost the entire route leads through near-natural areas and some protected areas . Since the route leads through the middle of the Ruhr area, many testimonies of industrial culture can be seen right on the edge of the path and are signposted with information boards on which historical events and their connections are explained.

In addition to 25 main attractions (so-called "anchor points"), there are six museums of technical and social history, nine viewpoints with a panoramic view of the industrial landscape and twelve workers' settlements that can be visited and three visitor centers where information about the Ruhr area circuit is provided.

Infrastructure for cyclists

The greater Ruhr area is one of the most densely populated areas in Germany. The density of infrastructural facilities, such as hotels , youth hostels , campsites and grocery stores, is correspondingly high .

Large parts of the cycle route are used as cycle paths and footpaths at the same time . Especially on weekends, the volume of traffic on some routes (for example at the Ruhr dams) is very high.

The RVR has set up bike stations along the route, where Revier bikes can be rented and your own bikes can be repaired. In many districts of the major cities of the Ruhr area, local bicycle dealers have survived and offer the cyclist who is looking for help their repair service and, if necessary, spare parts.

All parts of the route can be easily reached by public transport . The entire area of the Ruhrgebiet circuit is served by the Rhein-Ruhr transport association - it is generally possible to take bicycles with you. Large groups of cyclists should be prepared for the limited capacities of public transport.

particularities

The Ruhr area circuit is often called the Tour de Ruhr , after a television series about a bike tour through the Ruhr area.
