The Kaiser Route was a 480 kilometer long long-distance cycle path through North Rhine-Westphalia from Aachen to Paderborn .

description

The Kaiser Route was named after Emperor Charlemagne , who resided in Aachen. The route was based on the presumed route that Charlemagne's army took in 775 on its way to the Saxon territory .

The route did not run exclusively on separate bike paths, but partly on busy main roads and was in parts quite steep. It was signposted with hexagonal white plaques that show a stylized crown in green, the inscriptions "Kaiser-Route" and "Aachen-Paderborn" and a stylized bicycle. It was opened in 1994 on the occasion of the State Garden Show in Paderborn. It has not been in operation since 2014 and most of the signs have been removed.
