history

The early documentary mentions of Wickede can be identified by a reference to the location on the Ruhr or the neighborhood to the Scheda monastery and thus differentiated from Wickede near Dortmund . The first mentions of Wickede an der Ruhr refer to the 11th century, but are forgeries from later times. A forgery from the first half of the 12th century mentions the year 1036. Early name forms are Wikki / Wicke, the suffix -de does not appear until the 14th century.

Around 1100 there was a scattered settlement consisting of five courtyards . This belonged to the county of Arnsberg . With the sale of the county of Arnsberg, Wickede fell to Kurköln in 1368 . The entire Electoral Cologne Duchy of Westphalia and with it the area of Wickede (except Scheda ) with 443 inhabitants at that time came to Hessen-Darmstadt in 1803 and to Prussia from 1816 .

The industrialization that had started brought the use of hydropower from the Ruhr to Wickede (Ruhr) . A puddling and rolling mill was created as an indirect predecessor of today's Wickeder Westfalenstahl GmbH . The population grew to around 1000 by 1870. The Ruhr Valley Railway of the Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft was opened in 1870. Wickede got its own train station. In 1889 a glassworks was built and caused a large increase in population. This glassworks was closed again in 1915. The first glass dome of the Eiffel Tower in Paris came from Wickede. With further industrialization, the population increased to 1547 inhabitants, as many skilled workers lived in the village. In 1939 there were 3334 inhabitants in Wickede.

Due to a British air raid on the barrier wall of the Möhnesees on May 17, 1943 during the Second World War , the Ruhr valley and with it parts of Wickede near the river were hit by a tidal wave . The flood claimed 118 lives in Wickede.

From April 1, 1945, the municipality of Wickede was part of the Ruhr basin that was enclosed by Allied troops . Troops of the US Army occupied the city between the 9th and 14th of April. During the occupation there were no major battles in what is now the city. The effects were most severe in real houses. Echthausen was fired at by US artillery for three days before the US invasion on April 14th . Two women and several foreign prisoners of war lying in the local hospital were killed and several buildings were hit.

At the end of 1967 Wickede had 7,585 inhabitants. The workers in the industry made their living primarily in steel processing and in two large factories specializing in hospital supplies.

In the shield, which is divided from silver (white) over blue in a wavy cut, a continuous black cross above, and below a silver (white) cog wheel growing out of the base of the shield.

description

In the upper half of the Wicked coat of arms appears the black cross of the Electorate of Cologne , to which the area of the Ruhr community belonged in earlier years. The lower half symbolizes a heavy gear or flywheel. It stands as a clearly visible sign of the special position the municipality of Wickede (Ruhr) occupies for heavy industry. In this context, the undulating dividing line is reminiscent of the Ruhr, which meanders through the town and reaches its northernmost point in Wickede. The coat of arms was approved on April 3, 1970 by the district president in Arnsberg.

The municipality also flies a flag. It is blue-white-blue striped lengthways and bears the municipal coat of arms in the upper half of the white field. The official seal contains the coat of arms with the surrounding writing of the community of Wickede (Ruhr) .
