history

Traces from the Neolithic Age have been found in Wimbern . The first written evidence of Wimbern can be found in the small Isenberger Vogteirolle , which was created before 1220.

During the Menden witch trials 1628–1631, two men from Wimbern were executed as witches : Blesien Billi, the merry, and Franz Hellmich, the lame. On October 29, 1628, under torture , they made the required confession of witches, but were able to escape from the prison in the tower of the city wall. After a few days they voluntarily presented themselves to the court to protect their families from retaliation and were executed on December 2, 1628. The city council of Menden unanimously decided on December 14, 2011 to rehabilitate the victims of the witch trials convicted in Menden.

Around 1820 Wimbern became an important station in the mail transport of the Thurn und Taxis postal service . About 50 years later, the era of the stagecoach was already over when the railway was built and Wickede with the newly built station became a central transshipment point. The old post office "Am Schlünder" opposite the former Marienkrankenhaus is now a restaurant.

The municipality Wimbern once belonged to the Office Menden , district Iserlohn . Since July 1, 1969, Wimbern has been part of the municipality of Wickede (Ruhr) in the Soest district due to the law on the reorganization of the Soest district and parts of the Beckum district .

Marienhospital Wickede-Wimbern

In the so-called Third Reich , contrary to widespread press reports, the Marienkrankenhaus was not used by the National Socialists for their euthanasia program. In addition, the chief public prosecutor Maaß, as the head of the central office in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia for the processing of National Socialist mass crimes at the Dortmund public prosecutor's office , stated :

"The investigations did not provide sufficient evidence for homicides - especially euthanasia-killings."

- Dr. Theo Bönemann : Judgment on the public prosecutor's investigation in the case of the grave finds in Barge / Wimbern / Menden

The mass graves that were found on the site of the Barge cemetery in 2006 were initially associated with the euthanasia program; Later it turned out that these graves were the result of hasty burials from the hospital in the chaos of war. None of the dead were murder victims. At that time, the Wimbern hospital was an alternative hospital for the hospitals in Bochum and Dortmund.

From 1969 to 1983 the Marienkrankenhaus housed the only smallpox ward in Westphalia. The last smallpox epidemic in Germany took place in early 1970 when a 20-year-old brought smallpox into the northern Sauerland and infected a total of 20 people. The sick were isolated in the Marienhospital in Wimbern. After the WHO declared smallpox to be eradicated in 1980, the station was converted into the St. Raphael nursing home. The hospital had to cease operations on December 31, 2011 for economic reasons and was wound up.

The state of North Rhine-Westphalia is currently planning to set up a central accommodation facility for 500 asylum seekers.

monastery

In 1950, the Steyler Missionary Sisters acquired the land for the Holy Spirit Monastery from Baron Max von Boeselager from Höllinghofen Castle in Vosswinkel . After a two-year construction phase, they moved into it in spring 1956. On May 2, 1956, Archbishop Jaeger consecrated the monastery church.

coat of arms

On April 15, 1937, the then independent municipality of Wimbern was awarded the coat of arms. The official description reads: "Heraldic shield divided in silver and red; above a half red mill wheel with nine black blades, below an overturned (upside-down) barrel iron." The mill wheel also points to the old mill tradition on the Mühlenbach (Graberbach). The lower field corresponds to the coat of arms of the old Menden office , whereby the fallen barrel iron is taken from an old court seal of the Electoral Cologne court of Menden from the 18th century. The colors red and silver stand for Westphalia.
