The Wickeder Westfalenstahl GmbH ( WIWE ) is the parent company of the Group Wickeder a medium-sized manufacturer of metallic semi-finished with eight locations in Germany, USA and China.

history

On October 25, 1913, the company founded by the merchant Bernhard Bauer from Letmathe in Wickede (Ruhr) was entered in the commercial register under the name "Wickeder Eisen- und Stahlwerk GmbH, Precision Drawing and Cold Rolling Mill". To protect against imitation, a patent for the plating of iron strips with aluminum was opened in 1920 . The further development of the company was temporarily interrupted by the Möhne disaster in 1943 and the total dismantling of the production facilities in 1948. In 1949 the building was rebuilt and production started on a makeshift basis. In 1964 the companies "Kaltwalzwerke Ebbinghaus & Co." and "Kraft & Co." were taken over and continued together as "Westfalenstahl Kalt- und Profilwalzwerke GmbH". 1969 Wickeder Westfalenstahl developed cold strip for shadow masks; These are etched components in color picture tube televisions and put them into production. The first colored claddings (Cufer, Brafer, Tomfer) were successfully produced in 1978 and the first stainless steel claddings in 1985. The merger of the two plants "Wickeder Eisen- und Stahlwerk GmbH" with "Westfalenstahl GmbH" to "Wickeder Westfalenstahl GmbH" happened in 1993. In the following year the company also bought "Kaltwalzwerk Risse". Since 2002, Wickeder Westfalenstahl has had a production site in the USA ( Pleasant Prairie (Wisconsin) ) with the "Wickeder Steel Company" (around 50 employees ), where strip steel is hardened. In 2006, the newly founded company "MICROMETAL", of which Wickeder Westfalenstahl is a partner, began manufacturing the first micro-precision components using wet-chemical etching processes in the industrial area of Müllheim. Another subsidiary was added in 2007 with the takeover of the American company "EMS". Since then, the company has had production facilities on three continents. In 2014 the Auerhammer metal works was taken over. In 2015, with the sale of the Wickeder Steel Company, the company parted with its cold-rolled strip division in order to focus on its core businesses of clad materials and thermal bimetals.

Products

The Wickeder Group's sales sectors include the energy sector, the automotive industry, the household appliance industry, the electrical and electronics industry, medical technology, and mechanical and plant engineering for which clad materials are manufactured. Plating is the no longer separable composite material of two different metallic layers created by very high pressure. This creates combinations of properties that a single material cannot achieve.

The best-known examples of a cladding composite are the 1 and 2 euro coins, which are made of copper alloys (support strips) and nickel (core strips). Among other things, cookware is made from copper-stainless steel composites. The copper as the outer material ensures good heat distribution, the stainless steel ensures that the pots and pans are food safe. In the electrical sector, copper-aluminum composites are often used, as there is almost no contact resistance between Al and Cu and the weight advantage of up to 70% compared to full copper as well as the good electrical and thermal conductivity and good heat transfer are used.

The Wickeder Group's portfolio includes the following product groups:

  • Clad materials
  • Thermal bimetals
  • Nickel and nickel alloy rods and wires
  • Nickel-based metal strips
  • Metallic foils
  • Etched micro-precision components
