Forests on the Mühlenbach nature reserve

The nature reserve Wälder am Mühlenbach is a 71  hectare nature reserve (NSG) southeast of Wickede in the Soest district in North Rhine-Westphalia . The NSG was designated in 2006 by the district council of the Soest district with the Ense-Wickede landscape plan. The NSG borders directly on the district boundary in the southeast. In the urban area of Arnsberg in the Hochsauerlandkreis , the Lürwald nature reserve borders directly in the south . The NSG has been part of the FFH area Lürwald and Bieberbach (no. DE-4513-301) since 2004 , also as part of the European bird sanctuary Lürwald and Bieberbach (no. DE-4513-401).

Area description

The NSG is a deciduous forest area with red beech and oak. There are also spruce, alder-ash and softwood alluvial forests. Part of the course of the Mühlenbach runs in the NSG.

Species such as crested newt , brook lamprey and bullhead have been identified in the NSG . From Annex II of the Habitats Directive was u. a. the following species of birds found: kingfisher , honey buzzard , Middle Spotted Woodpecker , Gray-headed woodpecker , black stork , red-backed shrike and Red Kite .

Protection purpose

The NSG is supposed to protect stream and forest with their inventory of species. As with all nature reserves in Germany, the protection designation indicated that the area was declared a nature reserve “because of the rarity, special character and beauty of the area”.
