action
Austria 1934. After three years of research excavations in Heraklion on the Greek island of Crete , the young archaeologist Robert returns to his homeland, Salzburg. He finds that the country has changed significantly, and political and social tensions have increased massively. The main reason for his return home is his permanent engagement with Hanna, whom Robert wants to break off as "pious, gentle and cowardly", as he says, because he has fallen in love with Loraine, the wife of his British employer, the constantly drunk Sir Gerald. But these private matters soon faded into the background when the coup of German-National Socialist forces took place and Austrian Chancellor Engelbert Dollfuss was murdered. Hanna, who is not very decisive in this private matter, wants to try to save what can be saved in her relationship and asks Robert to meet at a remote castle hotel near a reed-covered lake.
But it is precisely here, in the idyll, where the great world politics seems particularly remote, that a catastrophe occurs: Villagers and holiday guests find themselves in the midst of armed conflicts, between the fronts of political opponents: on the one hand the putschists and on the other the defenders of the Austrian sovereignty, the Heimwehr associations. A harmless deaf-mute finds himself in this vortex of horror, who is suddenly supposed to be lynched in this heated mood. But now Robert intervenes and shows his political colors for the first time. In order to protect the scapegoat, nameless tramp, the archaeologist invents an ominous "man in the reeds", a phantom of his inspiration, a fantasy creature, and thus puts his life in danger. But finally Hanna of all people, the undecided and evasive, gets caught in the mill of political unrest and becomes her victim.

Reviews
"The film tries to establish a connection between the historical background and the individual fate, but it only succeeds to a limited extent."
"Psychograms? Tanned pictures from Austria by Manfred Purzer. "
"Without tension, indifferent and boring", the critics found the feature film (1978) by the right-wing film official Manfred Purzer. "
