Heinrich Schweiger

Heinrich Schweiger (born July 23, 1931 in Vienna , † July 14, 2009 in Salzburg ) was an Austrian actor .

Life

Schweiger attended the Max Reinhardt Seminar and gave in 1947 his debut in The Wonder Bar by Karl Farkas at the New Theater. In 1948 he first appeared at the Theater in der Josefstadt . On September 21, 1949 he had his first appearance in Der Hauptmann von Köpenick at the Burgtheater , to whose ensemble he belonged from then on.

In 1956 he received an engagement at the Bavarian State Theater in Munich and later at the Düsseldorfer Schauspielhaus . From 1961 on, Schweiger played again at the Burgtheater and became one of its most striking actors. He played, among other things, the title characters of Othello , Richard III. , Don Carlos (with Werner Krauss , when Oskar Werner took over ) and Götz von Berlichingen , the Puntila in Mr. Puntila and his servant Matti , but also the Doolittle in the musical My Fair Lady .

At the Salzburg Festival he played the devil or mammon for twelve years. In 1960 he played Titus Feuerfuchs at the Luisenburg Festival in Wunsiedel in Johann Nestroy'sThe Talisman ” (director: Gustav Manker ). Schweiger has made guest appearances on various other stages and has directed several times himself.

In feature films, Heinrich Schweiger was able to prove himself in very different productions. Mostly he played high-ranking personalities such as Emperor Napoleon in two landlady films or the Pope in The Elixirs of the Devil . He impressed both in musical comedies and in pediatrician Dr. Happy as the superior of Roy Black as well as in ambitious productions like Trotta . He played Colonel Novotny in the Bockerer film series.

From 1983 on, Schweiger was married to the journalist and politician Ursula Stenzel for the third time . From the first marriage with Eva Schweiger come a daughter and a son, who appeared at the side of his father in the television film Before Court We See Each Other (1978, director: Peter Weck ). Today he works in the directorate of the theater museum .

A few days before his 78th birthday, on July 14, 2009, he succumbed to cardiovascular failure as a result of a brain hemorrhage. On August 27, 2009 he was buried in an honorary grave in the Vienna Central Cemetery (Group 40, No. 74).

Awards

The chamber actor Schweiger was awarded the Kainz Medal in 1967 , the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art 1st Class, the Golden Medal of Honor of the Federal Capital Vienna and honorary membership at the Burgtheater. In 2003 he received the honorary title of professor.
