Trotta (TV title of ORF: Trotta - Die Kapuzinergruft ) is a German film by Johannes Schaaf from 1971. It is based on the novel Die Kapuzinergruft by the Austrian author Joseph Roth . In 1973 the film was shortlisted for an Oscar for best foreign language film , but received no nomination. The film was also screened in competition at the 1972 Cannes Film Festival .

After the First World War and the fall of the monarchy, a young officer of the Austro- Hungarian Army, Franz Ferdinand Trotta, returned to Vienna from Russian captivity. He is overwhelmed with the new order and the circumstances. He has lost his fortune and his wife has indulged in a same-sex relationship with an emancipated Hungarian artist.

The film-dienst described the film as an "atmospherically dense and very sensitive film adaptation of the novel". She takes “directly and without distance” the “point of view of the main character” and describes “beyond the death of an epoch, its inability to grasp this development”.
